Dr. Mangala Katugampola was assigned as the new Head of the Department of Archaeology of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya. The appointment letter was handed over to Dr. Mangala Katugampola by the Vice- chancellor, Prof. D.M. Semasinghe on the 19th of November 2018 at the Office of the Vice- chancellor. Present at the occasion were Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice- chancellor and Ms. Dhammika Ambegoda, Assisstant Registrar- Academic Establishment Division.

Dr. Mangala Katugampola who has obtained his first degree from the University of Kelaniya in 1998 has successfully completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Archaeology from the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology. Subsequently, he obtained his MPhil Degree from the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology in 2010 and under that he conducted research on Ancient Settlement Studies and GIS. In 2015 he obtained his PhD from Sichuan University, China and the research pertaining to his PhD is based on Spatial Studies and GIS.

A ceremony for the commemoration of World Philosophy Day 2018 organized by the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya was held on the 15th of November 2018 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The prime objective of the celebration which is being celebrated each year the third Thursday of the month of November, was to highlight the current necessity for Philosophy and create accuracy of the human vision.

Prof. Nalin De Silva, a former academic staff member of the Department of Mathematics delivered the keynote speech based on the theme “Western Science Myth and Eastern Science”.

“Aithihaasika Paryaawalokanaya 1818- 2018”: bicentennial celebration ceremony of 1818 rebellion organized by the History Society of the Department of History, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya was held on the 31st of October, 01st and 02nd of November 2018 at the premises of the Faculty of Social Sciences. This occasion which was held in relation to bicentennial celebration of 1818 rebellion, consisted of a research conference, an educational programme, an inter- school quiz competition and a cultural show.

The research conference was held on the 31st of October at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences and an academic discourse was also held covering all the fields relevant to 1818 rebellion.

The celebration of Deepavali organized for the first time by the Peace Club of the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya was held on the 08th of November 2018 at the Department of Philosophy. The celebration was organized with the objective of providing an insight into Deepavali festival and improving cooperation among religions at the university level.

The event comprised of Hindu cultural performances related to Deepavali and a vivid image was created through the drawn Kolam designs and the lamps lit by the undergraduates. Moreover, the undergraduates got an opportunity to taste some food items which are unique to Hindus.
