University of Kelaniya Wins Women’s Championship and Men’s 2nd Runners-Up at Inter-University Karate Championship 2024

The ‘Inter-University Karate Championship 2024’ was held from 1st to 3rd of November 2024 at the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine. Teams from both men and women categories, representing all state universities, participated in this competition.
In this competition, the University of Kelaniya won the Women’s Overall Championship, followed by the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, who shared the 1st runners-up position.
Also, the University of Kelaniya secured the overall 2nd runners-up position in the men’s category in the Inter-University Karate Championship, while the University of Colombo and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura won the joint championship.
In the women’s category, Yamashi Ekanayeka won first place in Team Kata, Individual Kata, and Individual Kumite (-55kg), while Parami Amalka Rajapaksha won first place in both Team Kata and Individual Kumite (-45kg) categories. K. E. M. Rashmi Shravindya also claimed first place in the Team Kata category. Further, P. V. Thilini Madhubashini, Sandunika Wijerathna, and L. A. Hashini Madushika secured 3rd place in the categories, Individual Kumite (-50kg), Individual Kumite (-68kg), and Individual Kumite (+68kg), respectively.
In the men’s category, P. G. Dinuwara Randil Perera won Gold Medals in both Individual Kata and Team Kata categories, and the Silver Medal in the Individual Kumite (84kg) category. M. P. Manindu Nethmina won 1st place in the Team Kata category and 3rd place in the Individual Kumite (50kg) category, while H. G. Tharindu Nirmala claimed 1st place in the Team Kata category. Further, W. M. A. Wijesinghe, W. M. W. Wijesinghe, and Danuka Chathuranga secured 3rd place in the categories, Individual Kumite (-67kg), Individual Kumite (-75kg), and Individual Kumite (+84kg), respectively.
