Sayuri Mendis and Rasara Wijesooriya Shine at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships 2025

Two undergraduates from the University of Kelaniya made significant contributions to Sri Lanka’s performance at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships 2025, held in Gumi, South Korea, from 27th to 31st May.

Ms. Sayuri Mendis, a third-year undergraduate reading for the BSc Honours in Sports Science Degree, offered by the Faculty of Science, showcased exceptional talent and determination as part of Sri Lanka’s relay teams. Her outstanding performance earned the nation two bronze medals: one in the Women’s 4x400m Relay and the other in the 4x400m Mixed Relay.

In the Women’s 4x400m Relay, the Sri Lankan team, comprising Nadeesha Ramanayaka, B. Sayuri L. Mendis, H. J. Uththara Mudugamuwa, and M. A. Nishendra H. Fernando, secured third place behind the teams from India and Vietnam, who claimed the gold and silver medals respectively. Meanwhile, in the 4x400m Mixed Relay, Sayuri teamed up with Sadew Rajakaruna, Kalinga Kumarage, and Nishendra Harshani Fernando to earn another bronze medal, with India and China finishing first and second in the event.

Adding to Sri Lanka’s success at the championship, Ms. Rasara Wijesooriya, a second-year undergraduate of the same BSc Honours in Sports Science Degree, delivered a record-breaking performance in the Women’s 10,000m event. Finishing seventh overall, Rasara set a new Sri Lankan national record with a time of 33 minutes and 21.62 seconds, surpassing the previous national mark of 33:39.60 minutes.

These achievements by Sayuri and Rasara reflect not only their individual commitment and talent but also the quality of academic and athletic training provided by the Faculty of Science at the University of Kelaniya. The university community extends its heartfelt congratulations to both athletes and looks forward to their continued success in the future.
