Eight University of Kelaniya Undergraduates Represent Sri Lanka at Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games – Summer

Eight outstanding undergraduates from the University of Kelaniya proudly represented Sri Lanka at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games – Summer, held from 16th to 27th July, 2025, in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany. Recognized as the world’s premier university-level sporting event after the Olympic Games, the World University Games brought together elite student-athletes from across the globe.
These eight students were part of a 30-member Sri Lankan contingent, which included 27 undergraduate athletes and 3 officials. Their participation marks a significant milestone for the University of Kelaniya, reaffirming its growing reputation for fostering sports excellence alongside academic achievement. Of the eight, seven students are from the Faculty of Science, pursuing the BSc Honours in Sports Science Degree Programme, while one student represents the Faculty of Computing and Technology, following the BSc Honours in Computer Science Degree Programme.
Representing the Faculty of Science, S. M. Sandev S. Senarathne competed in swimming, showcasing strength and discipline in the pool. B. Sayuri L. Mendis, W. A. M. R. Wijesuriya, and H. M. N. K. Rathnayaka took part in athletics, demonstrating exceptional performance on the track. H. M. Saneshi U. Herath also represented Sri Lanka in swimming, while Thanushi N. Rodrigo competed in table tennis, and H. H. Welikala represented the nation in taekwondo. From the Faculty of Computing and Technology, Tharin S. G. Punchihewa brought pride to the University by competing in badminton.
Two of these student-athletes, S. M. Sandev S. Senarathne and B. Sayuri L. Mendis, received complimentary tickets from the event organisers in recognition of their exceptional commitment and performance. In a commendable show of support, the University of Kelaniya covered all expenses, including airfare, visa fees, accommodation, and meals, for the remaining six athletes, ensuring that each student had the opportunity to focus solely on their preparation and performance.
