The University of Kelaniya was able to secure the number one (1) rank among the Sri Lankan Universities in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking 2023.  Further, the University of Kelaniya was able to advance in its global rank to 226 (from 241 in 2022), out of the 1183 universities that applied for the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking this year.

According to the official website of the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, this was initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010 regarding green campus and environmental sustainability using 39 indicators in 6 criteria i.e. Setting and Infrastructure (SI), Energy and Climate Change (EC), Waste (WS), Water (WR), Transportation (TR), and Education (ED). The universities’ commitment to the environment is a high concern in deciding the rank.
