Emeritus Professor K. A. L. A. Kuruppuarachchi, awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science

Emeritus Professor K. A. L. A. Kuruppuarachchi of the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (D. Sc.) by the University of Kelaniya at its 153rd General Convocation, held on the 7th of October 2025 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).
The ceremony was presided over by Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Chief Incumbent of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, Kithsiri Mewan Vihara, Former Head of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, Aggamahapandit, Most Ven. Prof. Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkitha Maha Thera.
This award was made in recognition of the contribution he made to improve the mental health care services in Sri Lanka and globally, which was achieved by carrying out numerous research work related to the field. His work has been published in National and International journals and also presented in scientific conferences. He also authored a number of books and contributed to several book chapters related to the field, in order to disseminate the knowledge in psychiatry. In addition to establishing the department of psychiatry in the University of Kelaniya, he made a significant contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatric education in Sri Lanka.
The award was presented, and the citation was read by Prof. M. N. Chandratilake, Dean of the Faculty of Science.
