153rd General Convocation of the University of Kelaniya

The 153rd General Convocation of the University of Kelaniya was held ceremoniously on the 7th of October 2025 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Colombo.
At this convocation, Emeritus Professor K. A. L. A. Kuruppuarachchi of the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (D. Sc.), in recognition of the contribution he made to improve the mental health care services in Sri Lanka and globally, which was achieved by carrying out numerous research work related to the field. His work has been published in National and International journals and also presented in scientific conferences. He also authored a number of books and contributed to several book chapters related to the field, in order to disseminate the knowledge in psychiatry. In addition to establishing the department of psychiatry in the University of Kelaniya, he made a significant contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatric education in Sri Lanka.
The convocation ceremony consisted of 03 sessions. During the 1st session, 14 graduands of the Doctor of Philosophy Degree, 05 graduands of the Doctor of Business Administration Degree, 11 graduands of the Master of Philosophy Degree, 42 graduands from the Master of Science Degree, 04 graduands from the Master of Commerce Degree, 23 graduands from the Master of Social Sciences Degree, 07 graduands of the Master of Business Administration Degree, 05 graduands from the Master of Business Management in Marketing Degree, 10 graduands from the Master of Human Resource Management Degree, 21 graduands of the Master of Arts Two Years Degree, 08 graduands of the Master of Biochemistry & Biotechnology Degree, 01 graduand of the Master of Applied Microbiology One Year Degree, 05 graduands of the Master of Industria & Environmental Chemistry One Year Degree, 02 graduands of the Master of Analytical Chemistry One Year Degree, 01 graduand of the Master of Crop Protection & Plant Biotechnology One Year Degree, 01 graduand of the Master of Data Analytics One Year Degree, 05 graduands of the Master of Information Technology One Year Degree, 02 graduands of the Master of Accounting Degree, 02 graduands of the Master of Business Finance Degree, 84 graduands of the Master of Business Studies Degree, 70 graduands of the Master of Arts Degree, and 05 graduands of the Postgraduate Diploma, offered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies; 02 graduands of the Postgraduate Diploma in Kayacikitsa and 06 graduands of the Postgraduate Diploma in Pancakarma, offered by the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute; and 165 graduands of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degree, offered by the Faculty of Medicine, were conferred.
At this session, Ms. Millagasthennalage Dilanka Nishani Nandasiri was awarded the Gold Medal presented by the Alumni Association of the Master of Business Studies Degree, for obtaining the highest GPA at the Master of Business Studies Examination in the year 2024. Mr. Muhammadu Yaseen Saajidh Ahamed was awarded the Professor Carlo Fonseka Gold Medal for best overall performance of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degree; Most Ven. Yakkaduwe Sri Pragnarama Thero Memorial Gold Medal for obtaining the highest marks at the Final Examination for Medical Degrees, offered by the Alumni Association of the University of Kelaniya; Gold Medal in Anatomy for obtaining the highest marks at the First Examination for Medical Degrees; Gold Medal in Medical Microbiology for obtaining the highest marks at the Second Examination for Medical Degrees; Gold Medal in Parasitology for obtaining the highest marks at the Second Examination for Medical Degrees; Gold Medal in Pathology for obtaining the highest marks at the Second Examination for Medical Degrees; Gold Medal in Pharmacology for obtaining the highest marks at the Second Examination for Medical Degrees; Gold Medal for the Best Performance at the Second Examination for Medical Degrees; Gold Medal in Surgery for obtaining the highest marks at the Final Examination for Medical Degrees; Gold Medal in Paediatrics for obtaining the highest marks at the Final Examination for Medical Degrees; and the Gold Medal in Obstetrics & Gynecology for obtaining the highest marks at the Final Examination for Medical Degrees. Ms. Ravini Amila Premaratna was awarded the Professor Asoka Dissanayaka Gold Medal for the best performance in the First Examination for Medical Degrees; Professor Lal Chandrasena Gold Medal for obtaining the highest marks for Biochemistry at the First Examination for Medical Degrees; Gold Medal in Physiology for obtaining the highest marks at the First Examination for Medical Degrees; and the Gold Medal in Medicine for obtaining the highest marks at the Final Examination for Medical Degrees. Ms. Abeykoon Mudiyanselage Deepani Nayanathara Amarasooriya was awarded the Gold Medal in Family Medicine for obtaining the highest marks at the Second Examination for Medical Degrees. Ms. Krishanni Prabagar was awarded the Gold Medal in Forensic Medicine for obtaining the highest marks at the Second Examination for Medical Degrees. Ms. Mohamed Jauher Fathima Shifnah was awarded the Gold Medal in Psychiatry for obtaining the highest marks at the Final Examination for Medical Degrees.
During the 2nd session, 02 graduands of the Bachelor of Commerce (Special) Degree and 03 graduands of the Bachelor of Business Administration (General) Degree, offered by the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies; 63 graduands of the Bachelor of Arts Degree, offered by the Faculty of Humanities; and 420 graduands of the Bachelor of Arts Degree, offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences, were conferred.
During the 3rd session, 150 graduands of the Bachelor of Arts Degree, offered by the Faculty of Humanities, and 350 graduands of the Bachelor of Arts Degree, offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences, were conferred.
Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Chief Incumbent of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, Kithsiri Mewan Vihara, Former Head of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, Aggamahapandit, Most Ven. Prof. Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkitha Maha Thera; Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, the Vice-chancellor of the University of Kelaniya; Deans of the Faculties; Heads of the Departments; the Acting Registrar; the Librarian; Directors and Chairpersons of the Units and Centers; Academic and Non-Academic Staff; graduands; and their families graced the event.
