The Ceremony of Long Service Awards and Vice-Chancellor’s Awards of the University of Kelaniya was successfully held under the patronage of Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, on the 1st of January 2026 at the Sri Dharmaloka Hall of the University.
The prime objective of the Ceremony, which has been held annually since 2007, was to appreciate the service of the academic & non-academic staff members during the previous year and encourage them further.
Professor J. M. D. Ariyarathna from the Department of Accountancy, Professor H. T. C. S. Abeysena from the Department of Public Health, Professor A. H. M. H. The Vice-Chancellor’s Awards 2025 honored outstanding contributions to the university's digital presence by recognizing the most impactful websites across several categories. In the Best Centre/Unit/Division category, the Centre for Sustainability Solutions, the Research Council and the Staff Development Centre secured first, second and third places, respectively, while the Ethics Review Committee, Floriculture Research Centre, Centre for International Affairs, and Centre for Social Reconciliation received commendations. The Department of Industrial Management topped the Best Department category, followed by the Department of Philosophy in second place and the Department of Human Resource Management in third. The Department of Archaeology, Department of Finance, Department of Hindi, Department of Plant & Molecular Biology, Department of Political Science, and the Software Engineering Teaching Unit received commendations under the same category. In the Best Postgraduate Institute Website category, the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology and the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies were commended. The Best Faculty Website Award was secured by the Faculty of Computing and Technology, while the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences received commendations under the Best Faculty Website category. Further, Mr R. H. U. Jayantha, Classroom Booking System; IPRC Conference, Faculty of Graduate Studies; Mr M. A. K. S. Munasinghe, The Library; and Mr Dinuranga Buddhikumara, UOK Admin Services were commended under the Web Category of the Outstanding Service.
The Vice-Chancellor’s Awards 2025 also honored outstanding contributions in bringing honour to the University by winning prestigious national/international awards in 2025. Emeritus Professor Janaka de Silva, Cadre Chair and Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Cadre Chair Senior Professor Ananda Rajitha Wickremasinghe, Cadre Chair and Senior Professor Asitha de Silva, Cadre Chair and Professor Sachith Mettananda, Professor Anuradhani Kasturiratne, and Professor Nayana Gunathilaka received commendations in recognition of being ranked among the top 2% in the World in the Elsevier list of highly cited Scientists for 2024 (Published in September 2025). Prof. M. B. K. C. Dayasiri from the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine was commended in recognition of receiving the Taylor & Fransis Prize for the Best Oral Presentation at the Asia Pacific Association of Medical Toxicology (APAMT) Scientific Congress held in Malaysia. Dr J. A. K. P. Jayasooriya Menike from the Department of Modern Languages, Faculty of Humanities received commendations in recognition of receiving the Regional World Sinologists Conference Organization Award presented by the World Sinology Center of Beijing Language and Culture University, China. Ms R. K. N. D. Darshani from the Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies was commended in recognition of being the ‘Sustainability Diplomacy Icon Leader – High Award Honours’ in the event organized by the Sri Lanka -United Nations Friendship Organization (SUNFO) Global Federation. Senior Professor N. A. K. P. J. Seneviratne from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science received commendations in recognition of winning prestigious national award for Competitive Research Grants and SUSRED Awards organized by National Science Foundation held in July 2025. Senior Professor M. D. P. Gunawardhana from the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Social Sciences, received commendations in recognition of receipt of State Literary Award for 2024 for the Best Original Academic Research Text. Senior Professor J. A. Liyanage from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, was commended in recognition of receiving SUSRED award from the National Science Foundation in recognition of the supervision of the PhD. Senior Professor N. Jayathilaka from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science received commendation in recognition of winning prestigious national award for Competitive Research Grants and SUSRED Awards organized by National Science Foundation held in July 2025. Prof. D. S. G. Mettananda from the Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine was recognized for receiving Dr Kumaradasa Rajasuriya Award for the best paper in Tropical Medicine awarded in the Anniversary International Medical Congress of Sri Lanka Medical Association 2025. Prof. G. P. G. M. D. Hapugoda, Molecular Medicine Unit, Faculty of Medicine was appreciated in recognition of a SUSRED award from the National Science Foundation for co-supervision of a PhD. Prof. P. A. D. H. N. Gunathilaka, Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, was commended in recognition of receiving SUSRED Awards and seven NRC Merit Awards. Professor K. P. R. N. Attanayake, Department of Plant & Molecular Biology, Faculty of Science was acknowledged in recognition of receiving NSF Research award for grants completed in 2019 for Scientific Excellence and NSF research Award for grants completed in 2023 – certificate of commendation. Professor D. A. D. A. Daranagama, Department of Plant & Molecular Biology, Faculty of Science was recognized for securing the Young Scientists Award presented by the Institute of Biology(IOB), Sri Lanka. Dr A. W. A. P. L. Wanigasooriya, Department of Library & Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences was admired for receiving the Emerald South Asia LIS Research Fund Award 2024 presented by Emerald Insight Publishing. Dr K. R. N. Harshani, Department of Library & Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences was appreciated in recognition of receiving ‘MSU President’s Awards 2025 honour Alumni under the category of ‘Academic Excellence’. Emeritus Professor H. J. de Silva, Cadre Chair and Senior Professor A. R. Wickremasinghe, Prof. K. T. A. A. Kasturiratne, Prof. W. M. M. L. Chandradasa, Dr R. P. Wanigatunge, and Dr A. A. L. K. Athauda, were commended in recognition of receiving Presidential Awards for Scientific Publications in 2021, awarded by the National Research Council in 2025. Moreover, Prof. A. C. de Alwis, Dr C. C. Jayasundara, and Dr A. K. A. B. Baminiwatta received appreciation in recognition of receiving CVCD Awards for Excellence in Research, made in 2025.
The Vice-Chancellor’s Awards 2025 also honoured academics for excellence in research, innovation and creative works in 2025. From the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Professor H. A. K. N. S. Surangi was awarded as the researcher with the highest number of publications in indexed journals. Ms E. Rebecca and Ms R. K. N. D. Darshani won the first and second places, respectively, for the Outstanding Young Researchers in the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, while Dr H. M. S. V. Silva, Ms W. B. M. D. Basnayake, Ms N. P. K. Ekanayake, Ms G. S. Malalage, Ms W. M. H. K. Bandara,and Mr H. M. M. N. Herath from the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies received Merit Awards under the same category. Prof. H. A. K. N. S. Surangi and Prof. W. M. C. B. Wanninayake won the first and second places, respectively, for the Outstanding Researchers in the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, while Prof. M. P. N. Janadari, Dr S. S. J. Patabendige, Dr H. M. T. S. Herath, Dr G. H. B. A. de Silva, and Dr M. L. D. C. J. Liyanage from the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies received Merit Awards under the same category.
From the Faculty of Computing & Technology, Dr. P. W. Samarasekere was awarded as the recipient of the highest amount of external research grants, while Prof. S. R. Liyanage and Dr T. Sharmilan received Merit Awards under the same category. Both Dr N. M. Hakmanage and Dr W. D. C. Udayanga secured first place, followed by Dr T. Sharmilan in second place under the Outstanding Young Researchers category in the Faculty of Computing and Technology. Dr R. R. L. U. I. Rajapaksha and Prof. S. R. Liyanage won the first and second places, respectively, for the Outstanding Researchers in the Faculty of Computing and Technology, while Dr P. W. Samarasekere and Dr S. M. Pathirana received Merit Awards under the same category.
From the Faculty of Social Sciences, Ms G. B. I. Weerasinghe and Mr P. P. G. Jayathilake won the first and second places, respectively, for the Outstanding Young Researchers in the Faculty of Social Sciences, while Dr A. W. A. P. L. Wanigasooriya was recognized as the Outstanding Researcher in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
From the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. D. S. G. Mettananda was awarded as the researcher with the highest number of publications in indexed journals, while Prof. G. P. G. M. D. Hapugoda received a Merit Award for being the recipient of the highest amount of external research grants. Prof. P. A. D. H. N. Gunathilaka and Dr A. K. A. B. Baminiwatta won the first and second places, respectively, for the Outstanding Young Researchers in the Faculty of Medicine, while Dr H. K. Pathiraja, Dr K. K. M. Fernando, and Dr K. W. S. M. Wijayawardhana from the Faculty of Meidicine received Merit Awards under the same category. Prof. D. S. G. Mettananda and Prof. M. B. K. C. Dahanayaka was recognized as the recipient of the highest amount of external research grants in the Faculty of Science, while Prof. D. S. M. de Silva, Prof. K. P. R. N. Aththanayaka, Prof. M. D. M. D. W. M. M. K. Yatawara, Prof. D. A. D. A. Daranagama, and Dr D. D. C. de S. Wanniarachchi recieved Merit Awards under the same category. Dr. K. C. Ayanthi and Prof. D. A. D. A. Daranagama won the first and second places, respectively, for the Outstanding Young Researchers in the Faculty of Science, while Prof. I. U. Hewapathirana, Dr A. G. M. J. Gunaratna, Dr J. N. The academics, attached to the Centre for Gender Studies, namely, Prof. P. A. S. Edirisinghe, Director; Dr H. R. S. Sulochani, Deputy Director; Dr A. K. Jeewandara, Faculty Representative - FCT; and Ms K. A. H. N. Karunanayake, Coordinator, were appreciated with a special award with regard to the highest amount of external research funding received for a multi-disciplinary project involving more than one Faculty.
During the event, university-wide awards were also awarded. Accordingly, Senior Pofessor S. R. D. Kalingamudali, Senior Professor L. B. D. R. P. Wijesundera, Prof. K. M. D. C. Jayathilaka, Prof. A. L. A. K. Ranaweera, Dr. J. A. Senevirathna, and Dr. P. L. A. K. Piyumal secured first place as the Best Innovators/Inventors in the University, as a group, followed by Prof. B. M. Jayawardhana in second place, and Mr M. A. K. S. Munasinghe in third place. Mr N. N. C. S. Cooray was awarded as the academic with the most outstanding creative production in the university, while Prof. K. P. R. N. Attanayaka was awarded as the academic with the most outstanding creative literary work in the university. Professor M. D. P. Gunawardhana was awarded as the Best Promoter of international relations in the university. Professor K. C. D. Mettananda was awarded as the researcher with the most publications from university (internal) research grants. The Faculty of Science was honoured as the faculty with the highest number of research papers presented in research conferences/symposia organized by it and its departments/centers/units.
Senior Professor N. A. K. P. J. Seneviratne, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC); Deans of Faculties; Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies; Acting Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Archaelogy; Librarian; Registrar; and Bursar were among the participants of this special ceremony. All the awards, medals, and certificates were distributed by the Vice-Chancellor, Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva.
