Numerous Winnings for the University of Kelaniya at the Inter- University Taekwondo Championship

Inter- University Taekwondo Championship organized by the Department of Physical Education, University of Kelaniya was held on the 29th and 30th of September 2018 at the Indoor Stadium of the University of Kelaniya. The prime objective of this tournament which was held under the supervision of Sri Lanka Universities’ Sports Association, was to improve sports skills of the undergraduates.

The inauguration ceremony of the event was held under the patronage of Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, Vice- Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. Senior Prof. S.R.D. Kalinga Mudali, Chairman- Board of Sports Instructors and Senior Lecturer Dr. Lanka Ranaweera, Acting Director- Department of Physical Education and the Instructors of Physical Education also graced the event.

Both girls’ and boys’ teams representing the University of Colombo, University of Peradeniya, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Kelaniya, University of Moratuwa, University of Jaffna, University of Ruhuna, Wayamba University, Sabaragamuwa University, Uva Wellassa University and a boys’ team representing the South Eastern University Participated in the championship.
Boys’ teams from the University of Kelaniya and University of Moratuwa won the Men’s Championship while the University of Sri Jayewardenepura won the second runner- up. Girls’ Team from the University of Moratuwa won the Women’s Championship and the University of Kelaniya won its first runner- up. University of Ruhuna won its second runner- up.

W.A.D. Isurujith who participated in the tournament under +87Kg weight category (Men) and S.N.W.M.S.T. Weerasekara who participated under 58- 63Kg weight category (Men) from the University of Kelaniya won the first places under the respective weight categories. W. Ranuri W. Wickramasinghe who participated under 63- 67Kg weight category (Women) and G. Madara Supulchandra who participated under 57- 62Kg weight category (Women) also won the first places.

P.H. Thamesh Malinda who participated under 54Kg weight category (Men) won the second place while R.L.A. Wishwani who participated under 53- 57Kg weight category (Women) also won the second place, representing the University of Kelaniya.

P.K.D.M. Nandasena who participated under 80- 87Kg weight category (Men), R.A.M.P. Dharmawardena who participated under 74- 80Kg weight category (Men), M.A.M. Perera who participated under 68- 74Kg weight category (Men) and G.K.H. Pieris who participated under 54- 58Kg weight category (Men) won the third places under the respective categories.
