Opening Ceremony of Walakulu Bemma around the Bodhi Tree, University of Kelaniya

On the 01st of November 2019 the University Bodhi tree’s encircling wall (bodhiprākāra) and golden fence (ran väta)  were constructed. This was done in honour of 144th anniversary of Vidyālankāra Monastic School for Oriental Studies, the jewel of Kelaniya University, and was made possible through charitable funds. The Bodhi tree itself derives from a branch of the Jaya-ŚrīMahā Bodhi tree at Anuradhapura.

Today the 10th of March 2020 marks the second stage of this project. In accordance with the vision of Venerable Dr. Dodamkumbure Dhammadassi Thero, the committee chairman, an additional wall, decorated with both traditional engraving and new cloud-shape (valākulu) engraving unique to Kelaniya University, has been assembled around the perimeter of the premises. This was also made possible solely through charitable funds.

We are joined by Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor of the University as the ceremony’s chief guest. Senior Prof. Lakshman Senevirathna, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, all the Deans of Faculties, the Council Members of University, Directors, Heads of the Departments including Ven. Prof. Imduragare Dhammarathana Thero, that bigin with Mr. W.M. Karunarathna- Registrar as well as non-academic staff members of the University graced the event.
