Dragon Boat Festival Celebration Activities Organized by the Confucius Institute at the University of Kelaniya 2022

The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival was held on the 03rd of June 2022. The Confucius Institute at the University of Kelaniya had organized a number of activities for students in connection with the Dragon Boat Festival.
Its main purpose was to generate new knowledge and understanding of the festival for the students.
Many of the undergraduates of the University of Kelaniya, including students of the Weekend Certificate Course in the Chinese Language who are interested in learning Chinese, actively participated in this month-long activity.
Its first activity, “Making Zongzi”, took place on the 2nd of June 2022 at 3.00 pm via Zoom. It was conducted by Mrs. Yang Yuhong, a Chinese national living in Sri Lanka. Several students of the University of Kelaniya took part in the event live online.
The second activity was the Cultural Lecture about the Dragon Boat Festival. This was held on the 7th of June 2022 through Zoom technology under the patronage of all the lecturers of the Confucius Institute, University of Kelaniya. There, the students gathered to enjoy the culture and customs of the Dragon Boat Festival. The event was interpreted by Dr. Jani Samarakoon, Co-Director at the Confucius Institute.
The lecture series was divided into two parts. In the first part, Assoc. Prof Sun Cuibi lectured about the origins of the Dragon Boat Festival and its cultural significance. In the second part, Assoc. Prof Tang Ying lectured on the rituals associated with the Dragon Boat Festival. During the activities, the students also actively participated in a QA session.
At the end of the ceremony, Dr. Wu Hongyuan, Co-Director at the Confucius Institute delivered the final speech, encouraging students to look at and think about how Chinese festivals are celebrated in different countries and civilizations.
The third activity was Poetry Recitation Competition and it was held on 28th June 2022 through Zoom technology. Undergraduates of the University of Kelaniya, students of the Weekend Certificate Courses in the Chinese Language, as well as students who studying Advanced Level Chinese language participated in this competition.
There, Miss He Yanling collected and categorized poems and prose on the theme of the Dragon Boat Festival, adding Chinese Pinyin and a short introduction. Co-Director Dr. Wu Hongyuan, Assoc Prof. Tang Ying, Assoc Prof. Sun Cuibi, and Miss. He Yanling conducted online training for the students.
Co-Director Dr. Jani Samarakoon, Miss. Shashini Kumarasinghe and Miss. Wayani Kariyawasam organized the event and made announcements.
