An awareness programme on waste management organized by the Zoology and Environmental Management Association of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya was held on the 27th of November 2018 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Science. The prime objective of the workshop was to expand the knowledge and experiences gained by special degree students of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management to school students.

The workshop was held aiming the students of Kirillawala Central College, Bandarawatta Parakrama Maha Vidyalaya, Sumedha College, Gothami Kanista Vidyalaya, Mahamaya Girls’ College and an introduction was provided to the participants on how to manage waste materials according to sustainable methodologies.

An awareness programme on AIDS organized by the Medical Centre, University of Kelaniya was held on the 14th of November 2018 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Humanities. This programme which is another step relevant to the programme series on the Promotion of Public Health, was being organized in relation to World AIDS Prevention Day designated on the 01st of December.

During the programme, the participants were provided with information on the methods of transmission and prevention of AIDS. The programme helped in making the participants aware of the mythical beliefs and latest treatments regarding AIDS. Moreover, the participants got an opportunity to get done HIV screening test for free.

Senior Lecturer Dr. Sagarika Kannangara was assigned as the Head of the Department of Botany of the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya. The appointment letter was handed over to Dr. Sagarika Kannangara by the Vice- chancellor, Prof. D.M. Semasinghe on the 19th of November 2018 at the Office of the Vice- chancellor. Present at the occasion were Senior Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice- chancellor, Mr. W.M. Karunarathne, Registrar and Ms. Dhammika Ambegoda, Assistant Registrar- Academic Establishment Division.

She obtained her BSc Degree from the University of Kelaniya and her PhD in Soil Microbial Ecology from a split PhD programme conducted by the University of Calgary, Canada and the University of Kelaniya. Her research interests are in the fields of Soil Biology, Bio Remediation and Applied Mycology.

“IGNITRA ‘18” Inter- School Chemistry Quiz Competition organized by the Chemistry Society of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya was held on the 10th of November 2018 at Dharmaloka Hall. The competition was organized with the objective of developing Chemistry knowledge of the A/L students who study Chemistry and attracting students to study Chemistry which is being considered a difficult subject.

Four schools got selected from a test that was held in the first round and the team from Gampaha Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya won the championship of the competition. The teams from Ananda College- Colombo and Bandaranaike College- Gampaha won the first and the second runners up respectively.
