Senior Lecturer Mr. Jayantha Kalansooriya was assigned as the new Head of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education. The appointment letter was handed over to Mr. Jayantha Kalansooriya by the Vice- Chancellor, Prof. D.M. Semasinghe on the 19th of November 2018 at the Office of the Vice- Chancellor. Present at the occasion were Senior Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice- Chancellor and Ms. Dhammika Ambegoda, Assistant Registrar- Academic Establishment Division.

Mr. Jayantha Kalansooriya has obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kelaniya and has followed the Postgraduate Diploma in International Affairs from BCIS.

He has obtained his MA in Japanese Studies from the University of Colombo and M. Com from the University of Kelaniya. He is currently reading for his PhD at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

08th lecture of the lecture series on heritage studies organized by the Centre for Heritage Studies of the University of Kelaniya was held on the 27th November 2018 at the K27 203 Hall of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The lecture was held with the objective of expanding research knowledge on heritages.

Dr. Sushma Trivedi, Professor- University of Lucknow (India) conducted the lecture on the theme: Rathnagiri- Resourcing & Reclaiming Buddhist Art & Art Style in India & Beyond.

A tree plantation programme organized by the undergraduates who follow B.A (special) Degree in Psychology offered by the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya was held on the 16th of November 2018 near the Art Gallery of the university.

The prime objective of this programme which was held in relation to the course unit Environmental Psychology of B.A. (special) Degree in Psychology, was to contribute to take necessary steps to create an environmental friendly society and improve students’ attitudes about environmental education.

More than 50 saplings including Kaluwara, Rathhandun, Dewadara were planted and it is also planned to implement a programme to maintain the plants.

Dr. Mangala Katugampola was assigned as the new Head of the Department of Archaeology of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya. The appointment letter was handed over to Dr. Mangala Katugampola by the Vice- chancellor, Prof. D.M. Semasinghe on the 19th of November 2018 at the Office of the Vice- chancellor. Present at the occasion were Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice- chancellor and Ms. Dhammika Ambegoda, Assisstant Registrar- Academic Establishment Division.

Dr. Mangala Katugampola who has obtained his first degree from the University of Kelaniya in 1998 has successfully completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Archaeology from the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology. Subsequently, he obtained his MPhil Degree from the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology in 2010 and under that he conducted research on Ancient Settlement Studies and GIS. In 2015 he obtained his PhD from Sichuan University, China and the research pertaining to his PhD is based on Spatial Studies and GIS.
