01st Virtual Inter University Taekwondo Poomsae Championship - 2021

01st Virtual Inter University Taekwondo Championship 2021 was held on 12th and 13th of November 2021 via Zoom application. It was organized by the University of Kelaniya in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Universities Sports Association as the first ever virtual live Poomsae championship in Sri Lanka.

90 taekwondo players (44 men & 46 women) representing University of Colombo, University of Kelaniya, University of Moratuwa, University of Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Uva Wellassa University, University of Vavuniya, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, and University of the Visual and Performing Arts participated the event.

University of Moratuwa won both men and women championships. University of Kelaniya and University of Colombo won the 01st Runner-up of women and men championship respectively. University of Sri Jayewardenepura won the 02nd Runner-up in both men and women categories.

Taekwondo players of universities performed their Poomsae lively in their respective university venue or in residence and the performances were judged by the panel of referees from Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation.

Opening ceremony of the championship was held on the 12th of November in hybrid mode. Cadre Chair & Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya was the Chief Guest. Senior Prof. S. R. D. Kalingamudali, Dean- Faculty of Science, Chairman- Sports Advisory Board, Grand Master Ki Zu Lee, Chairman- Technical Committee of Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation, Senior Lecturer Dr. Namali Suraweera, Department of Library and Information Sciences, Member- Sports Advisory Board, and Mr. G. G. U. Saman Kumara, Acting Director- Physical Education attended the ceremony in person while Senior Lecturer Dr. Chandrakantha Mahendranathan, President- Sri Lanka Universities Sports Association (SLUSA), Directors of Physical Education, Instructors of PE of other universities, and competitors participated virtually.

The closing ceremony was held on the 13th of November and same distinguished guests of the opening ceremony attended via Zoom, Facebook, and YouTube live.

Technical team of online platforms was headed by Senior Lecturer Dr. Namali Suraweera.The competition including the opening and closing ceremonies were live streamed via Facebook and YouTube. This was empowered as a joint operation by the ICT Centre and the Communication and Media Unit of University of Kelaniya.
