An Honorary Degree Doctor of Literature “Sahithya Chakrawarthi” was awarded to the Veteran Cinematographer, Mrs. Sumithra Peris.

The veteran cinematographer, Mrs. Sumithra Peries was awarded an Honorary Degree Doctor of Literature “Sahithya Chakrawarthi” for her outstanding contribution towards the advancement of the Sri Lankan and international cinema by the University of Kelaniya Yesterday (15) at the 120th convocation of the University held at BMICH.
It was awarded to Mrs. Sumithra Pereis by the Chief Incumbent of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara and Kithsiri Mewan Vihara, former Head of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, the Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya Aggamahapanditha Most Ven. Professor Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkitha Maha Thera.
She was awarded this Honorary Doctor of Literature “Sahithya Chakkrawathi” as an appreciation of her commendable service in uplifting the Sri Lankan cinema through a variety of films and for being a pioneer in creating a unique position for Sri Lankan cinema internationally.
Her contribution to the field of cinema and television as a director and editor was phenomenal. Being awarded for directing Gehanu Lamai, Ganga Addara, Yahalu Yeheli, Sagara Jalaya Madi Henduwa Oba Handa, Loku Duwa, Duwata Mawaka Misa, Sakman Maluwa and editing Gamperaliya, Delowak Athara, Bakmaha Digee, Madol Duwa, Ahasin Polowata and Ganga Addara films were remarkable milestones in her cinematic journey. She brought great honor to the motherland by being a member of the panel of judges in both local and international arenas as a chairperson.
Mrs. Sumithra Peries shared her valuable thoughts during the event and Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Deans of the faculties, Registrar, a group of academic staff, non-academic staff, parents, and graduands had graced this event with their presence.
