The Awards Ceremony of “Kalana 2018”

The Awards Ceremony of “Kalana 2018”: Performances, Media Art and Literature Competition organized by the Arts Council of the University of Kelaniya was held on the 06th of December 2018 at the Dharmaloka Hall. “Kalana 2018” which is being organized annually with the objective of developing performances, media art and literature skills of the students was held for the 02nd consecutive time.
Awards, certificates and cash prizes were distributed to the students who won the first place while certificates and cash prizes were distributed to those who won the second and third places. Certificates were distributed to the other winners.
“Maha Muhuda” drama directed by Suwishmi Nirmani won the Ediriweera Srachchandra Memorial Award for the Best Drama under One-Episode Drama Category and Suwishmi Nirmani, the director and the protagonist of “Maha Muhuda” drama won the Ediriweera Srachchandra Memorial Award for the Best Actress. Anuradha Bandara, the protagonist of “Kok Kaputu” drama won the Ediriweera Srachchandra Memorial Award for the Best Actor. “Horu” short film directed by Pramod Chandima Rathnayake won the Lester James Peries Memorial Award for the Best Short Film.
Miyuru Pabasara Dissanayake won the Solias Mendis Memorial Award for the Best Artist, P.G.H.G. Bandara Polkatuwa won the Dr. Premasiri Kemadasa Memorial Award for the Best Instrument Player and Randima Prabodhini Kaluarachchi won the Wilson Hegoda Memorial Award for the Best Photographer. Nadi Senevirathne won the W.D. Amaradeva Memorial Award for the Best Singer (Solo) while Christina Rovina Fernando and the group won the W.D. Amaradeva Memorial Award for the Best Singer (Group).
B. Bandara and W.A.D.K.R. Wanigasinghe, G.M.S.S. Wijewardhane and G. Chathurika Sandamali won Chitrasena Memorial Award for the Best Couple Dance. D.P.D. Dissanayake won the Chitrasena Memorial Award for the Best Singer while D.P.D. Dissanayake and the group won the Chitrasena Memorial Award for the Best Group Dance. D.P.D. Dissanayake won the Chitrasena Memorial Award for the Best Classical Solo Dance while Suwishmi Nirmani won the Chitrasena Memorial Award for the Best Creative Solo Dance.
Wimukthi Akalanka Ariyarathne won the Kumarathunga Munidasa Memorial Award for the Best Lyricist. Yashoda Samarakoon Devapriya won the Kumarathunga Munidasa Memorial Award for the Best Poet (English) while Shenali Nuwanthika Perera won the Kumarathunga Munidasa Memorial Award for the Best Poet (Sinhala). Amila Madushan Wijethilake won the Martin Wickramasinghe Memorial Award for the Best Short Film (Sinhala) while Madushani Prasangika won the Martin Wickramasinghe Memorial Award for the Best Short Film (English)
Moreover, awards of appreciation were distributed to several celebrities in the field of Performances, Media Art and Literature. Accordingly, Award- Winning Prof. Sunanda Mahendra, Award- Winning Prof. Chandrasiri Palliyaguru, Award- Winning Prof. Somarathne Balasooriya, Veteran Actress Irangani Serasinghe and Veteran Dancer Vajira Chitrasena received the awards.
The event was held under the patronage of Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, Vice- Chancellor. Senior Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice- Chancellor, Deans of Faculties, Senior Prof. Ariyarathne Athugala, President- Arts Council, Directors, Presidents and Heads of other Councils, Units and Centres, academic staff members, Mr. W.M. Karunarathne, Registrar, non- academic staff members and undergraduates graced the event.
