18 academic staff members of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya received President’s Awards for Science Publication. They received the awards for Research and Scientific Publication in the year 2016.

The ceremony which was jointly organized by the Presidential Secretariat, National Research Council and Ministry of Science, Technology and Research was held under the patronage of His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena, the President of Sri Lanka on the 19th of November 2018 at the Hotel Taj Samudra, Colombo. 338 scientists and researchers were appreciated at the ceremony which was graced by Hon. Mohan Lal Grero, State Minister of Science, Technology and Research.

 

Cadre Chair and Senior Professor P.S. Wijesinghe assumed duties as the new Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya. The appointment letter was handed over to Senior Professor P.S. Wijesinghe by Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, Vice- Chancellor of the University on the 14th of August 2018 at the Office of the Vice- Chancellor. The event was also graced by Senior Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice- Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya.

Prof. Wijesinghe obtained his first degree from the University of Peradeniya and the second degree from the University of Colombo. He had undergone training both locally and in United Kingdom. Then he joined North Colombo Medical College in 1988 as a senior lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He then joined the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya and was involved in the establishment of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was appointed as the Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2004 and was then promoted as a Senior Professor in 2012.

Prof. Wijesinghe is the incumbent president of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He has been involved in curricular development and revision, curriculum delivery and evaluation of undergraduates at the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo. He is a fellow of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, USA and Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

He is a prominent intellectual in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and had also conducted many research on Gynaecological Oncology Fertility Regulation.
