Junior Research symposium on Humanities organized for the 2nd consecutive time by the Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, with the objective of developing research skills of the undergraduates was held on the 31st of October 2018 at Kotahena Sri Pragnakirthi Memorial Hall.

Around 100 research papers under the fields of Sanskrit Studies, Fine Arts, Language and Literature, Language Teaching, Linguistics, Philosophy and Religious Studies were presented at the Symposium. The symposium was conducted under three main sessions and its speciality was the poster presentation session.

Japan- Sri Lanka cultural exchange programme organized by the Research Centre for Japanese Studies of the Department of Modern Languages, University of Kelaniya in collaboration with the Japanese Club of the university was held on the 30th of October 2018 at Kotahena Sri Pragnakeerthi Memorial Hall. This was organized as a practical session for the undergraduates of B.A. (special) Degree in Japanese Studies under the course unit: “Inter- Cultural Communication”.

 

Two Professors from Kyoto Sangyo University, Japan graced the event as two special guests and they were able to provide an insight into the diversity in Japanese food culture.

“Chiththaavurthi” Classical Ballet organized by Drama, Theatre and Image Arts Unit, Department of Fine Arts, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya was held on the 10th of October 2018 at the Dharmaloka Hall. This event was organized in association with the course unit “Choreography and Stage Performance” which is relevant to final year undergraduates of Bachelor of Arts (special) Degree in Performing Arts.

Senior Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice- Chancellor, Ven. Dr. Kapugollewe Anandakiththi Thero, Chief Student Counsellor, Prof. Prashanthi Narangoda, Head- Department of Fine Arts, Heads of Departments, academic staff members, Mr. Chandana Wickramasinghe, Mr. Ravibandu Vidyapathi and several veteran dancers graced this event which was held with the objective of developing and appreciating the skills of the undergraduates.

The Department of Sanskrit was nominated as the “Department of Sanskrit and Eastern Studies”. The name board of the Department of Sanskrit and Eastern Studies was unveiled on the 25th of October 2018 at the entrance of the department.

The event was held under the patronage of Thripitaka Vagishvaracharya, Mahopadhyaya, Pandith, the Most Venerable Welamitiyawe Dharmakirthi Sri Kusala Dhamma Thero, – the Chief Prelate of the Colombo and Chilaw regions and the Chancellor of University of Kelaniya and the Most Venerable Prof. Kumburugamuwe Vajira Thero- the Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, Vice- Chancellor of University of Kelaniya, Senior Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice- Chancellor of University of Kelaniya graced the event.
