In a triumphant display of scientific prowess, three academics from the University of Kelaniya coached a group of talented Sri Lankan students who recently participated in the prestigious International Junior Science Olympiad held from 1st to 10th December 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. Three students clinched medals, one silver and two bronze, a shining achievement for the university. This is the most prestigious Olympiad in the world for juniors to demonstrate their science skills. For this Olympiad, 318 students from 54 countries around the world participated. This outstanding achievement not only highlights the individual brilliance of the students but also underscores the university’s commitment to academic excellence.
The University of Kelaniya remains committed to fostering a culture of innovation, curiosity, and academic rigor, ensuring that the students are well-prepared to meet the challenges of the global scientific community.
Senior Professor H. H. Sumathipala, Country Coordinator for the International Junior Science Olympiad, led the team, and Professor Mangala Ganehiarachchi, Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, and Dr. Chamila Kadigamuwa, Department of Chemistry, trained these students for the competition.
Professor Sumathipala appreciates the cooperation received from the Department of Physics and Electronics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Zoology and Environmental Science, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and the Vice-Chancellor, in that sense, the University of Kelaniya for providing an opportunity to Sri Lankan students to show their skills in international level. The Institute of Physics, Sri Lanka with the University of Kelaniya fosters this event every year.
The Debate Union of the University of Kelaniya met Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya on the 27th of December 2023 at the Vice Chancellor’s Office concerning their victorious achievement of being champions at the Capital Maharaja Group’s Inter-University Debating Tournament.
The University of Kelaniya was able to secure the number one (1) rank among the Sri Lankan Universities in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking 2023. Further, the University of Kelaniya was able to advance in its global rank to 226 (from 241 in 2022), out of the 1183 universities that applied for the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking this year.
